Leishmania is most common in dogs, but it is also observed in other animals. In this case, your animal is infected by the sand fly, which carries the disease. The sand fly is found around the Mediterranean Sea and around the equator. In Northern Europe, the sand fly is (still) not common, but has also been seen in certain areas of Germany. The sand fly is active between sunset and sunrise. Sand flies rest during the day. Dogs and other animals cannot infect each other, this is only possible if blood from one animal directly enters an open wound of another animal. Think of an AIDS infection. Fleas and ticks cannot transmit the disease.
The Scottish doctor, William Leishman, discovered that Leishmania is caused by a single-celled parasite (there are many types, for dogs the Leishmania infantum is important). This uses the sand fly as a host. When your dog is then stung by the sand fly, it becomes infected. The parasite multiplies in the white blood cells of your dog and enters the organs (kidneys, liver, spleen, bone marrow) via the blood. This makes your dog sick. Sometimes very quickly, but it can also take months to years (the incubation period is from four weeks to seven years!). There are also dogs that are infected, but never get sick. In such a situation, the parasite is encapsulated by the body. The dog usually has a great natural resistance. If, for whatever reason, the natural resistance decreases, the parasite can "wake up" and still strike with all its force.
Symptoms can vary depending on the situation. It is always advisable to get tested if in doubt. If your dog is bitten by a sand fly, sores or red bumps usually develop. These usually remain visible for some time, in any case much longer than a normal mosquito bite. The sand fly usually bites the auricle or the abdominal wall and very occasionally the nose. Research has shown that approximately 25% of infected animals actually become ill.
Which symptoms can we monitor ourselves:
If you think you recognize symptoms, have your vet test for Leishmania. If it is detected early, there is the best chance of treating your dog properly, which will, as it were, re-encapsulate the parasite. A dog that is infected once will remain infected for the rest of its life. If your dog is not treated, Leishmania is, as it were, a silent killer with all its consequences.
If the Leishmania infection continues, it can lead to:
There are various blood tests, but none that provide 100% certainty. In dogs that have already developed symptoms, a test is positive in most cases. If the dog does not yet have symptoms (but is carrying the disease!), a blood test can be negative in 50% of cases. However, it can also happen that the test is positive, but your dog will never develop symptoms. That is why the blood test is often repeated after some time. A bone marrow or lymph node puncture provides certainty. Discuss with your veterinarian which test is best suited to your dog. If your dog is infected, be careful about using antibiotics and/or anesthesia. This will greatly reduce the natural resistance and can actually “stimulate” the disease.
Dogs and other animals can be treated well. After your dog has tested positive for Leishmaniasis, the Chinese herbal formula Bai Fen will be started. You may also use the formula if there is a suspicion of Leishmania. If your dog does not appear to be infected with Leishmania and you have used Bai Fen, there will be no adverse effects for your animal. Bai Fen must be used for at least three months. Dogs that are retested after treatment can be negative. Some continue to use the tablet treatment throughout their lives without adverse effects. However, they do remain carriers of the disease. It is therefore advisable to have the blood checked again every 6 to 12 months (discuss this best with your vet).
Bai Fen has no side effects and can be given for a long time, even for life.
It makes sense to combine Bai Fen with Immunity Complex. Especially for dogs and cats that have been infected with leishmania for a long time. Immunity Complex ensures that the natural resistance is improved, which additionally supports the healing process. If your animal's immune system works well and therefore has sufficient natural resistance, leishmania has less chance of developing. After your pet has recovered, you must continue to do this for 3 months.
