Gallstones or cholelithiasis, stones in the gallbladder or in the bile duct. Often gallstones do not cause complaints and are discovered accidentally in abdominal X-rays. When they do cause problems, the disease is called cholelithiasis.
Gallstones are composed of either bilirubine (a waste product of the iron-containing pigment of the red blood cells), or cholesterol. They develop when the concentration of bilirubine or cholesterol in the gallbladder. Gallstones occur mostly in middle aged, obese pets.
Symptoms: The main indication for gallstones is a steady, not so painful ache in the upper abdomen. When the stone blocks the bile ducts, it can cause cholelithiasis , but also jaundice. In these cases the colour of the urine will be darker and the stools will have a lighter colour. When the stones are lodged in the duct the muscles of the walls of the duct will contract in order to transport the stone. The pain that is caused by this is referred to as a gallstone colic. This is a severe pain in the upper right abdomen, sometimes also in the back, that comes in waves an causes the pet so much discomfort it can barely lie still.
Especially for gallstones, Chinese herbal medicine has developed the formula Lysium. This formula can dissolve small stones. Large stones have to be removed surgically, when they cause your pet discomfort. Lysium can be used to prevent gallstones from reoccurring. The treatment takes about 3 months. The formula is also very effective for kidney- and bladder stones.
